Give Strength to Our Community

YearEndAppeal_2014_graphic_qu2Right now, Komen St. Louis funding supports six local organizations that deliver critical, life-saving breast health services – including free mammograms and navigation through the complex health care system – to individuals in our community who may not otherwise have access. Komen St. Louis funding allows Debra Custer and the Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation’s START NOW program to provide patient navigation and other breast health services to women who have low income or no insurance or who face other barriers to accessing this care. We can’t do this without the support of our community. Your support is vital and helps us fund:

  • Local, life-saving breast cancer screening, education and patient navigation programs
  • Cutting-edge research that will one day find the cures
  • A caring, compassionate community

Please help give strength to the local fight against breast cancer by giving to Komen St. Louis. Thank you!

Your Support Gives Strength

YearEndAppeal_2014_web_lgGuest Writer: Helen Chesnut, Komen St. Louis Executive Director

Since 1999, Susan G. Komen® St. Louis has built a reliable reputation in the St. Louis region. This is due, in large part, to the contributions, both financial and otherwise, of people who share our commitment to meeting the breast health needs of the women, men and families most at risk and most in need right here in our community.

Thank you for the role you play in supporting Komen St. Louis as we focus every day on our mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever. Your support gives strength to individuals in our community – individuals like Tondaleia.

Florissant resident Tondaleia, age 35 and mother of three, did not have health insurance when she found a painful lump in her breast last spring. She received a free mammogram, paid for by Komen St. Louis, through one of our community partners. After an ultrasound, a biopsy, genetic testing and a double mastectomy, Tondaleia is due to finish her chemotherapy treatments by Thanksgiving.

Knowing that we can help women like Tondaleia and others in our community every day gives me strength.

As an eight-year breast cancer survivor, I celebrate the sources of my strength: family, friends, faith. I was lucky. I knew I could get a mammogram when needed. I knew where to go for breast health services. I just knew I was going to live. Not everyone is as confident when they find a lump, and that is when Susan G. Komen St. Louis can give strength.

Right now, Komen St. Louis funding supports six local organizations that deliver critical, life-saving breast health services – including free mammograms and navigation through the health care system – to those, like Tondaleia, who may not otherwise have access due to low income, lack of insurance or other barriers. Right now, Komen-funded researchers in St. Louis are working to develop personalized breast cancer vaccines, to develop drugs that will prevent breast cancer recurrence and to determine a treatment for triple negative breast cancer.

Because breast cancer knows no boundaries and never takes a day off, I’m asking you to help Komen St. Louis by contributing to our 2014 Annual Giving Campaign today. Through the consistent and valued support of donors like you, we are able to make a difference in the care and survival of women like Tondaleia.

Your contribution will help give strength to hundreds of lives through the programs supported by our Komen St. Louis grants. I hope you will consider a gift in support of our mission. Please make a one-time or monthly donation today.

I thank you for your support.

Guest Writer: Dede Hoffmann, Komen St. Louis Board President

During this special time of year, I like to reflect on all I’m thankful for. As a 12-year, two-time breast cancer survivor, I am fortunate to count my many blessings.

While some of us are blessed with good doctors, health insurance and support systems, many breast cancer patients are not.

Imagine a woman’s fear when she feels a lump in her breast but knows she cannot afford a mammogram.

Imagine the devastation when a woman is told she can’t obtain life-saving breast cancer drugs or when she can’t pay for the bus ticket to get to her treatment.

From medications to treatment, research to support, Susan G. Komen dollars bring hope to patients and inspiration to researchers.

Komen St. Louis funding supports local organizations that deliver life-saving breast health services – including free mammograms and navigation through the health care system – to those who may not otherwise have access due to low income, lack of insurance or other barriers.

Komen-funded researchers in St. Louis are working to develop personalized breast cancer vaccines, to develop drugs that will prevent breast cancer recurrence, and to determine a treatment for triple negative breast cancer.

Komen dollars make a difference in the lives of breast cancer patients every day.

Because so many need our help, I’m asking you to help Komen St. Louis by contributing to our 2013 Annual Giving Campaign. Your donation will make a difference to women, men and families in our community facing a breast cancer diagnosis.

Our mission – to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures – has never been more important. And we can’t do this without your support. Please make a one-time or monthly donation today.

Susan G. Komen has touched nearly all of our modern approaches and treatments for breast cancer. Even my own survivorship depends on continued support of breakthrough research.

With your support, Komen St. Louis can continue to provide real-time help to those in our community facing the disease.

With your support, Komen can continue our quest in the fight against breast cancer.

Close Friendships Inspire Giving Back

Guest Writer: Nancy Tonkins, Member of River Queens

Our River Queens group has been assembling for 30 years! It all started with a group of friends who played softball together – some went to the same high school (Kirkwood). We started float-trip and camping weekends back then, overnights on the river. Through the years, various people have joined the group and some have left or moved on. The same “core” people still attend and now invite others. As we’ve gotten older, we no longer camp; we have progressed to condos on various lakes and pontoon boats instead of canoes. We’ve gone with as few as 10 to as many as 32 River Queens. We’ve all formed an amazing bond. And, we’re there for each other – always.Print

Which brings me to the purpose of this story: we know loss. Unbearable loss. We also know strength and courage and tenacity, as we have been there with two from our tight-knit group who have lost their battles with breast cancer. We have walked in the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure together and have raised money that way. We have given independently to Komen. However, we know there is more money generated when we encourage each other to donate. So we are now trying to collect more as a group.

As we’ve moved forward, we’ve thought about the funds we spend on making our River Queens weekends fun – the silly trinkets, baubles, souvenirs, crazy hats – and we’ve decided that we need to use this money more wisely…to give back in some way. We have decided that any kind of “slush fund” from our trip or any money we raise as part of our internal contests for the weekend should go to breast cancer research and breast cancer support. That’s why we gave to Komen this year.

The River Queens

We hope we may be able to inspire other women’s groups – who organize getaways together, play tennis together, went to high school together, or simply go to dinner together once a month – to join us in finding a way to support others in the fight against breast cancer. And we hope they, like our group, will remind each other to follow breast self-awareness steps and get annual mammograms.

When you sit around the room together, it’s hard to imagine losing another friend. And yet, chances are high that you will. Women know that as they get older, the risk increases. We encourage other groups of friends to consider a way to help fight for each other and fight to end this disease for their children’s sake as well.
