That’s because 90% of all breast cancer deaths occur when the cancer metastasizes – or spreads from the breast into vital organs like the bones, liver, lungs or brain. And there is no cure.

Maura Bivens knows firsthand about metastatic breast cancer. When Maura first found out she had breast cancer, she was 38 and a mom of three kids under the age of 10. She bravely battled the disease — and even earned her black belt in taekwondo soon after treatment. But less than two years later, Maura’s breast cancer had spread to her lungs. It was metastatic.
Maura fought back. She drew on the strength of the Komen community and her martial arts passion. And while Maura knows she’ll likely be fighting breast cancer for the rest of her life, she’s beaten it back. And now she’s enjoying every moment with her family.
